SE2EO: Professional Engagement-Describe and demonstrate two improvements in different practice settings that occurred because of nurse involvement in a professional organization(s).

Findings:

Example 1: Operating Room: a practice improvement was not demonstrated.

  • No pre-initiative data, before the period of intervention which started August, 2011 and included classes from March-June, were provided.

Example 2: Insulin Drip Protocol: a practice improvement for cardio-thoracic patients was demonstrated with improved post implementation data

Resolution:

Example 1:

  • Requested pre intervention data provided
  • Clarification of time line provided

Background

An increase in the number of operating room specialty procedure such as open heart and maxillofacial surgeries has led to increase in the use of flash sterilization. Best practices indicate that the use of flash sterilizations should be kept to a minimum and should only be used in selected clinical situations.

Measurements/Outcomes

Data was collected and documented by RN when flash sterilization of instruments occurred. This Data was used to track progress with this initiative as well as provide evidence of instrument necessity. The Data was discussed frequently during staff meetings and educational sessions were provided to reinforce and sustain results. Since the inception of this initiative, the commitment of the OR staff proved beneficial in decreasing flash sterilization. Their efforts led to a significant reduction in the immediate use of flash sterilization as compared to the pre intervention period in 2011.
