Resolution:

  • Operating Room RN example and requested data has been provided

Background:

A sudden increase in needle stick and sharp injury rates was noted in December 2011 and January 2012. There are many best practice strategies available to decrease sharp injury rates in the OR.

Goal:

  • Implement best practices to reduce needle stick and sharp injuries in the OR

Participation

Participants: All OR Staff RNs

Nursing Leaders:

7E Medical Surgical

Methods/Approach:

The Scalpel Safety policy in the OR policy was revised by Ms. Ebanks to include best practices (Appendix EP30EO-A). Ms. Ebanks and Ms. Babich provided educational sessions regarding Sharps Safety in the OR” to all nursing staff during January and February 2012 (Appendix EP30EO-B). The OR nurses implemented key process improvements into their daily practice to increase safety measures and decrease potential injuries.

Measurements/Outcomes:

RN needle stick and sharp injury rates were collected from employee health and monitored monthly. After implementation of educational intervention and policy update, the OR nurses sustained zero sharp injuries.
